Eastside Projects

STEAMhouse

From 2015–2023 Eastside Projects worked in partnership with Birmingham City University to develop STEAMhouse - a centre for creative and collaborative innovation which opened on Digbeth High Street in April 2018 and moved to the purpose-built Belmont Works building in 2022.

Funded by ERDF and Arts Council England the first phase of STEAMhouse was developed from concept to delivery through a partnership between Eastside Projects and the University led by Artist Maker Ruth Claxton. Involved since the project's inception in 2015 Ruth's role included concept development, strategic planning, fundraising, staff recruitment, programme design and development, SME support, and membership of the design team for the renovation and fit-out of the 15000 sq ft Phase 1 building including leading the technical team and designing and specifying the Production Space workshops.

The ERDF Funded Create Programme ran from 2018–2023, and we led the Open Route which supported artists and creative SME's with free mentoring, workshops, short courses, and access to the Production Space workshops - a large-scale makerspace with extensive facilities, equipment and technical support for production and prototyping in wood, metal, print, biomaterials and digital manufacturing.
