BACKGROUND Syllabus is a co-designed, alternative learning programme that creates an environment of mutual exchange between the artists that is responsive to each cohort. Each year it supports ten artists from across the UK over a ten month period. Syllabus was initiated in 2015 by Eastside Projects, Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridge), Spike Island (Bristol), Studio Voltaire (London), New Contemporaries (London) and S1 Artspace (Sheffield). Since then Iniva (London), The NewBridge Project (Newcastle), New Art Exchange (Nottingham), PS2 (Belfast), Taco (London), Site Gallery (Sheffield) have all been partners in the project. In 2023 the Freelands Foundation committed to long term funding for the project, enriching the support available for artists by funding bursaries and access costs for artists, gatherings, an Artist Lead and a dedicated Syllabus coordinator. SYLLABUS IX (2026-27) The Syllabus IX artists are artists Jessica Ashman, Alex Billingham, romane courdacher, George Gibson, Umama Hamido, Natalie Mitchell, Betty / Chaoying Rao 饶超颖 / Femme Castratrice, Korallia Stergides, Symoné and Jonny Walker This year's Syllabus partners are Eastside Projects, Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridge), PS2 (Belfast), Site Gallery (Sheffield) and Live Art Development Agency (London). The artist lead is Harun Morrison. Syllabus IX will gather in Birmingham in November. SYLLABUS VIII (2025–26) The Syllabus VII artists were Ocean Baulcombe-Toppin, Emma Bentley-Fox, Emma Brennan, Josie KO, Hannah Leighton-Boyce, april forrest lin 林森, Anouska Samms, Sym Stellium, Alexander Stubbs, and Kaiya Waerea. Partner organisations for 2025–6 were Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridgeshire), Eastside Projects, Spike Island (Bristol), PS2 (Belfast) and Site Gallery (Sheffield). Associate Partner Studio Voltaire, London. Syllabus VIII gathered in Birmingham on 20-22 February and shared work, explored movement language with Marley Starskey Butler and Kim Bormann, amplified with clay with Joanne Masding and learned about bogs and wet woodlands with Prof Henry Chapman and Dr David Smith. SYLLABUS VII (2024–25) The Syllabus VII artists were Alexis Parinas, Katrina Cobain, Moira Salt, Omid Asadi, Maggie Campbell, Michael m, Natasha MacVoy, Sahjan Kooner,Sophie Gresswell, and Yoojin Lee Partner organisations for 2024–5 were Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridgeshire), Eastside Projects, Spike Island (Bristol), New Art Exchange (Nottingham), PS2 (Belfast), Studio Voltaire (London) and TACO! (Thamesmead). The partners worked with Natasha Ruwona (Syllabus Coordinator), Uma Breakdown (Artist Advisor) and the ten participating artists to deliver Syllabus VII from June 2024, co-developing a roaming programme of intensive gatherings across the UK as well as an online programme of activity and support.SYLLABUS VI (2020-21) The Syllabus VI artists were James Clarkson, Lauren Craig, Ufuoma Essi, Bettina Furnée, Olga Grotova, Helen Hamilton, Elsa James, Freya Johnson Ross, Daniel Trivedy and Sam Williams. The artistic advisers were Jade Montserrat and Amanprit Sandhu. Syllabus VI gathered in Birmingham in September 2021 to explore the city, share work and think about working together. Workshops were led by Harun Morrison, Modern Clay and Samra Mayanja. The weekend was co-programmed by James Clarkson, Lauren Craig, Elsa James, Bettina Furnée, Helen Hamilton and Eastside Projects. Syllabus VI was delivered by Eastside Projects, Wysing Arts Centre, Studio Voltaire, Spike Island and Iniva. SYLLABUS V (2019-20) Syllabus V artists: Sophie Blagden, Juliet Davis-Dufayard, Yuxin Jiang, Hwa Young Jung, Sarai Kirshner, Jack Lewdjaw, Sarah Maple, Duncan Poulton and Aliaskar Abarkas. Artistic advisers: Barby Asante and Louise Shelley Syllabus V was delivered by Eastside Projects, Wysing Arts Centre, Studio Voltaire, Spike Island, Iniva and Newbridge Projects. SYLLABUS IV (2018–19) Syllabus IV artists: Scott Caruth, Libita Clayton, Jessica Coleman, Bettina Fung, Laura Hindmarsh, Beth Kettel, David Lisser, Alicja Rogalska, Kirsty Russell and Abigail Sidebotham. Lead artists: Jesse Darling and Harold Offeh. Syllabus gathered in Birmingham from 1–4 February 2018. Across the weekend we worked with Rosalie Schweiker, Sofia Niazi, Holly Pester and Harold Offeh. They showed new poster works at Recent Activity during Digbeth First Friday on 2 February, which responded to provocations set by Eastside Projects and Recent Activity. Syllabus III was delivered by Eastside Projects, Wysing Arts Centre, New Contemporaries, S1 Artspace, Studio Voltaire, Spike Island and Iniva.
