Join us for a conversation with Mathew Leung, architect and founding partner of Assemble, in the Production Space workshops at STEAMhouse.

Building from a simple invitation to think through what making means to him Mathew will talk about the tension between experimentation and application, and the challenges that arise when the practice of creating buildings is increasingly fragmented across a kaleidoscopic range of specialisms and operating within a complex regulatory framework.

He'll talk about where hands on making sits in Assemble's history and current practice, and will discuss projects they have developed around infrastructures of making (like Blackhorse Workshop, Granby Workshop), as well as more conventional projects for a range of clients (including Luma Atelier, Art on the Underground and The Blue) where making has been a component on different scales.

About Mathew

Mathew Leung is an architect and founding partner of Assemble who has led a broad range of projects, including public realm, workspace and deep retrofit of existing buildings. He was the chair of the board of directors of Blackhorse Workshop - a public workshop Assemble established in Walthamstow.

Mathew has lectured at cultural and educational institutions across the world and has taught at the Cass School of Architecture with Cass Cities, Spatial Planning and Urban Design unit and as a final year tutor on the postgraduate Architecture course at Central Saint Martins. He has wide-ranging research interests, contributing to publications such as the RIBA Journal and the Jovis publication Performative Urbanism: Generating and Designing Urban Space and was awarded the RIBA President’s Silver Medal for his Masters thesis.
