In this informal lunchtime conversation join Incidental Artist Seema Mattu, and Artist Curator Gavin Wade as they talk through practice, and Seema's approach to the invitation to be an Incidental Artist and their findings so far. Seema Mattu is a Valmiki world-building trickster, whose practice is framed as a theme park - known as SEEMAWORLD. Through speculative storytelling linked to British South Asian culture, and its roots in Birmingham, SEEMAWORLD is woven by computer-generated imagery, immersive real life environments, eco/labour-conscious sculpture, mixed-media animation, cultural archive and folk~punk sound design. This brings together visual, sonic and spatial spectacle to transcend and subvert complex themes surrounding: systems of caste, queer desire and technological iterations (and reiterations) of thing + self. As an agent of fantastical living, Seema is especially drawn to ways in which speculative punk genres, such as cyberpunk and solarpunk, fused with South Asian folk culture, make world-building tangible. With a DIY approach to making and sharing, Seema implements experimental methods to create narrative possibilities beyond traditional animation, storytelling, sound and design. SEEMAWORLD itself is a self-generating archive, where the familial combination of performance, animation, moving image, sculpture, archive, digital storytelling and sound design unite to help uncover a queer, diasporic Valmiki existence. Seema’s work has been showcased and supported globally, including projects with: Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, IKON gallery, New Art City, Blindspot Gallery and FACT. In April 2022, she completed Film London’s FLAMIN Fellowship and a year-long residency with Wysing Arts Centre in March 2023. In December 2021, Seema became a QUAD International Digital Fellow, leading to her first solo show in September 2023. Most recently, Eastside Projects have appointed her as an Incidental Artist to work on a significant project between 2024-2026.
