Eastside Projects

ONLINE: Live Studio Visit: Alice Channer

1pm – 2pm

The 21st century needs objects that are vulnerable, uncertain, other, alien. To navigate climate change, mass extinctions and extreme and rapid human-made changes in community, society, geology, politics, biology and economy, we need new kinds of objects. They must be confidently doubtful, awkward as well as elegant, horizontal as well as vertical, soft as well as hard. Objects like these might show us new kinds of embodiment – how to mutate, adapt, change state, survive, prosper". Alice Channer, Art in America, 2015

Join Gavin Wade and Ruth Claxton to visit Alice Channer in her East London studio. Over the last 5 years, Channer has been working alongside people, processes, forms and materials to make sculpture here in Birmingham and with the local metal industry in Digbeth. The conversation will focus on new works, the impacts of lockdown, organic forms within factory processes, and Channer’s methods of stretching, scaling, coating, dipping and unfurling of material and meanings.

Eastside Projects have had a long term relationship with Alice going back to the three-person show – Caroline Achaintre / Sara Barker / Alice Channer – in 2012.

This event will take place online via Zoom.

In case you missed it, the online studio visit is available to watch below.
