Artist Jasleen Kaur lead two days of workshops in the gallery in response to fellow Production Show artists Anticlockwise, Gabi Ngcobo & N.G.O.

As part of Production Show, Anticlockwise, Gabi Ngcobo & N.G.O are exploring an open circuit of manufacture that takes place around their premises in Johannesburg, South Africa, where unwanted materials such as used car tyres and scrap woods are given away for free and repurposed into saleable products.

Jasleen’s workshop took this cycle of trade materials and overlayed it onto Eastside Projects’ neighbourhood to consider alternative applications for scrap material brought in from local industries. Themes from her own recent work will feed in to and inform the workshop including considerations of the socio-materiality of objects and how these products contribute to the construction of identity and class.

Jasleen worked with ESP members over two days to first brainstorm, discuss and develop ideas, and to experiment with hands-on processes in the gallery to make new items that are borne out of the local area.

Day one focused on using tyres to build seating or sofas, and day two on making shoes.
