ÀDÌRẸ (Tie-dye Workshop)

1pm – 3pm

Adire is a resist-dyed cloth produced and worn primarily by Yoruba people in Nigeria, West Africa. This in person workshop, led by EOP Member Yusuf Dongo, will provide insight into this practice using tie-dye techniques, and common African symbols used in the Batik pattern.

This is a practical workshop. You are encouraged to bring plain (ideally white or light coloured) t-shirts, scarves, and other fabrics, but a limited supply will be provided on the day. Please wear clothes that you don't mind getting a bit messy.

Yusuf Dongo is a multidisciplinary artist. Born in Nigeria, Yusuf grew up in Ijebu-ode, Ogun State and studied Fine and Applied Art at Obafemi Awolowo University, before obtaining his Master of Arts at De Montfort University, Leicester. Yusuf draws inspiration from the range of skills he has picked up along his journey, including a range of forms and materials to explore heritage, political histories, diasporic issues, as well as the presentation of and preservation of his culture in the West through folkloric imagery. Currently based in Birmingham, Yusuf's works span drawing, painting, textile and iconic, figurative sculptures made from scrap metal.
