Explore the city on this study day with Artist Curator Gavin Wade and Tom O’Sullivan, one of the artists who made the new public artwork The Digbeth Cylinder (2026) on Digbeth High Street. Expect questions and conversations around art making and commissioning processes, what sculptures say to us, ownership and being good neighbours to artworks.

After meeting at Eastside Projects at 12 midday, the study day will start with a tour of the four new artworks on Digbeth High Street by Joanne Tatham and Tom O’Sullivan, Helen Cammock, and Sarah Taylor Silverwood before walking up to ‘blue nose’ – The Sleeping Iron Giant (1992) by Ondre Nowakowski – in Bordesley Green. We’ll picnic there before taxiing over to the Hockley Flyover and William Mitchell’s epic cast concrete Climbing Wall (1968), returning back to the centre and Mitchell’s Untitled (1965) set of 19 sandblasted concrete panels on Quayside Tower on Broad Street to finish our conversation.

Bring a packed lunch and comfortable walking shoes.
